What do we mean by “Out of School” Provision?
| | Breakfast Clubs |
| | After School Clubs |
| | Holiday Clubs |
| | Youth Clubs |
| | Childminders |
| | Activity Groups |
| | Youth Organisations |
| | Leisure Centres | The above are all examples of organisations that can be known as “Out of School” provisions.
How can we deliver an inclusive environment for all children?
| | We can combine the detailed knowledge that parents/carers have and the needs of the child with information about local provisions and local and national organisations. |
| | We respond to the individual needs as expressed by parents/carers. |
| | We will take into account the needs and wishes of the child. |
| | We will support the parents/carers to access the child’s needs and wishes. |
| | We will support the providers and the provision to enable them to realise the needs and wishes of the child. |
| | We will support the process of inclusion and promote inclusive environments. |
| | We acknowledge the rights of all families to be part of their local communities. |
| | We will support environments that welcome all children and adults and who are committed to caring for, valuing and respecting all children and adults equally. |
| | This means that we will work with, rather than for people and that we will listen to what they say. |
Why should we promote inclusion? Reasons for Inclusion
| | Inclusion is a human right and it makes good social sense. |
| | All children have the right to play together. |
| | All children are entitled to have the chance to join in a wide range of activities, whatever their race, sex, religion, language, ability or family background. |
| | Children should not be devalued or discriminated against by being excluded or sent away because of their disability or learning difficulty. |
| | Research shows that children do better both socially and academically when they are in an inclusive environment. |
| | Segregation teaches children to be fearful, ignorant and breeds prejudice. |
| | Only inclusion has the potential to reduce fear and to build up friendship, respect and understanding. |
| | The right to play is enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. |
| | The Children Act (2006) recognised that all children need good quality play throughout childhood in order to reach and maintain their optimum development and well being. | For more information and details of Inclusive Development Funding please contact: Sue Bucknall Out of School Development and Inclusion Officer 128 Pyle Street NEWPORT Isle of Wight PO30 1JW Tel: 01983 528645/01983 550935 email: sue.bucknall@iow.gov.uk
