Support Staff

Schools are changing – and the pace of that change is fast. More people are working in schools than ever before, including almost half a million support staff, nationally. Schools are becoming more complex organisations and the work of support staff is becoming more varied and demanding. There is an increasing emphasis on building the whole school team – leadership, teachers and support staff – so that, working together, everyone can make a more powerful contribution to the overall objective of raising standards.

Our aim is that all support staff have access to high quality training and development that meets their needs and allows them to contribute fully to raising standards in schools and ensuring children’s well-being.

In this section you will find the Framework for Professional Development for Support Staff which will guide you through different levels and support you in developing your own professional development portfolio. In addition there are pages relating to Vocational Qualifications, DfES Teaching Assistant Training and Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status.
