Newly Qualified Teachers

Teachers perform best if they are confident in their skills, satisfied with their performance and if they know that they have the full approval and confidence of their professional colleagues and the Governing Body of their school.

This information has been produced to support the induction of newly qualified teachers in Isle of Wight schools.
  • It aims to ensure that headteachers, induction tutors and newly qualified teachers are aware of the statutory requirements for induction and recognise their own roles and responsibilities in this process.
  • It is based on the Professional Standards for Teachers (2007) and the Career Entry and Development Profile.

A newly qualified teacher (NQT) is one that has been awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but has not yet completed an induction programme in a maintained school.

The induction period cannot begin until QTS has been awarded.
(see QTS Skills Test, Appendix A)

There are three categories of NQT:
  • Those who achieved Qualified Teacher Status post May 1999.
  • Those who achieved Qualified Teacher Status prior to May 1999.
  • Those who achieved Qualified Teacher Status outside the UK but within the EU.

Those in Category 1 are bound by the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998 and the subsequent regulations. This pack provides guidance to schools to enable them to fulfil these statutory requirements and provide an appropriate monitoring, support and assessment programme for these NQTs.

However, the LA and schools have a responsibility to ensure all newly qualified teachers receive appropriate monitoring, support and assessment. It is hoped that all NQTs will receive the same opportunities for professional development and it is expected that an annual report is also completed for those NQTs in Categories 2 and 3, who, for identification purposes, we have termed ‘New Teachers’. Guidance is also included for such NQTs.
