About half the children killed in road accidents were pedestrians - the rest were mainly car passengers or cyclists.

Accidents are more common in the summer and between the hours of 8.00 to 9.00 am and 3.00 to 7.00 pm.

A substantial number of accidents take place on the journey to and from school.

More casualties occur on minor than on major roads. These are often close to home and away from safer crossing places.

Older children are more at risk than younger ones. More children aged 11 - 15 are injured as pedestrians and cyclists than any other age.

Speed is an important factor in preventing road accidents
