Gifted and Talented Children

INTRO00 INTRO01

Many terms are used to describe the different groups of more able pupils. In attempting to make appropriate provision for them in schools it is useful to consider that in any mixed ability class there are likely to be two or four pupils or about 10% of the ability range who constitute a recognisable band of high ability. This group includes those of still higher ability, the very able, who represent 5 - 10% of the ability range and the exceptionally able who often operate at levels well above their chronological age and will be located in the top 1% of the ability range.

The term 'very able' corresponds with the term 'gifted and talented' which is used by the DCSF and OFSTED (i.e. between 5 - 10% of the ability range).
